About Work Your Way

We established the Work Your Way program in 2017 so every Red Hatter, customer, and visitor would know, in any office in the world, that they were part of a greater community with shared values. Though our world and the way that we use our offices has changed, our values have not. While our workplace ecosystem has expanded, our approach to our guidelines and standards continues to be flexible, purpose-driven, and adaptable to the needs of our associates.

Red Hat managed offices

Our custom-built offices are more than just workspaces; they are physical embodiments of Red Hat's unique culture and values. These spaces are thoughtfully designed by and with Red Hatters to foster creativity, collaboration, and community among associates and our guests. When you step into one of these offices, you'll feel an immediate connection to our brand and products, thanks to the vibrant, open layouts and Red Hat-inspired aesthetics. These offices aren't just places to work; they're environments that support performance and encourage active engagement, mirroring the dynamic and innovative spirit of Red Hat.

Managed service offices

In some locations, we leverage Managed Service Offices (MSO), where we will have access to coworking space, meeting rooms, and, in some locations, dedicated Red Hat space within the MSO. These MSOs serve as central hubs, offering a practical and resource-efficient solution. They provide a professional workspace that allows our team to collaborate effectively, meet with clients, and carry out their daily tasks without needing a dedicated Red Hat office. MSOs represent our commitment to flexibility and efficiency, ensuring that our teams have the necessary resources and a conducive work environment, wherever they may be.

Working from home

For years, Red Hat has committed to providing and supporting associates’ ability to work from home. We support and encourage associates to create an at-home working environment that best suits their needs for the work they do. We do this by providing equipment recommendations, partner discounting, and ergonomic accommodations through the global accommodations process for special needs.

Other work settings

We acknowledge that many Red Hatters work from alternate locations during a typical work week. These can include, but are not limited to: customer and partner sites, data centers, and coffee shops. While our guidelines and standards may not always apply to these other settings, we are still a resource for our associates.

We've come a long way since the first apartment.

Our offices reflect Red Hat's brand and the way associates work. They reflect pride in our company values - in transparency and collaboration, courage and freedom. And they show visitors and future Red Hat associates what it means to truly be an open source company.

1993 - 2013

During these early years, our office locations had no cohesive personality. Each office made its own policies, had its own artwork, and decorated with whatever random Red Hat branded items were easily accessible. There were no workplace design standards.

2018 - 2019

Red Hat workplaces across our global portfolio support mobility, but report growing pains in terms of rapid headcount growth, the large number of associates working on site, as well as space inefficiencies. Red Hat leadership prioritizes cost-effective investments that supports a change in how associates use office space.

2020 - 2024

The COVID-19 pandemic requires a quick pivot as to how, where, and when we work. The years spent with associates working from home pushes Red Hat—and many companies—to rethink what the “workplace” looks like. Red Hat leans into this new way of work and proactively asks for associate feedback to understand and anticipate how our workplaces should evolve.

2020

Red Hat launches the first Workplace Environment Experience survey (WEES). WEES is a global Red Hat survey that GWS administers for the first time in 2020, with the intention of it being a recurring survey. The goal of the survey is to understand  Red Hatter's work-from-home experience during the COVID-19 pandemic and their feelings about returning to an office to better anticipate how our workplaces should evolve in the future.

GWS partners with Leesman, the leading global independent authority on employee workplace experience, to prepare a survey that incorporates the Leesman Home Working Module (for benchmarking purposes) with customized Red Hat questions.

2021 - The Future of Work is now

Red Hat begins to live into the future of work and launches work profiles and Red Hat Reserve. Work profiles (authentication required) give Red Hatters clarity on where they can expect to work when the COVID 19 pandemic restrictions ease.  The launch of Red Hat Reserve (authentication required), our global desk reservation platform, allows associates to easily view and book workspaces for when they decide to work from an office. The launch of work profiles and Red Hat Reserve clarifies and enables a more flexible Future of Work for all Red Hatters.

2022

Red Hat continues to prioritize associate experience, workplace satisfaction, and keeping our unique culture in the midst of change. The company partners with local mural artists at 4 locations;  launches 5 workplace pilots; and keeps associate opinions top-of-mind through feedback in the WEES/WES surveys.

2023 - 2024

Red Hat realizes the extent to which associates have changed how, when, and where they work when offices reopen after the pandemic. Red Hat begins to implement our first-ever Real Estate Optimization evaluation and strategy, and makes recommendations to consolidate, share, or move offices in order to right-size our global office portfolio.

At the same time, Red Hat encourages associates to “move forward together” in our new work environment, and create opportunities — both in-person and online — to preserve our culture and cultivate new relationships.

Remembering our "what": release early, release often

Today, we continue to live into the ethos that make our company and products great — release early, release often. This has made us a leader in technology and if it's good enough for our software, it's good enough for our workplaces. We continue to evolve and to move forward together as One Red Hat.
